Citadel And Hanging Church And Gaer Andreson Museum

Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi began constructing this castle on top of Mount Mokattam in the year 572 AH/1176 AD in a place known as the Dome of the Air, but he did not complete it during his lifetime. Sultan al-Kamil bin al-Adil (604 AH/1207 AD) completed it, so he was the first to inhabit it and take it as a residence for the king, and it remained a residence.  To rule Egypt until the era of Khedive Ismail, who moved the seat of government to Abdeen Palace in the Khedive Cairo area.

 The castle witnessed many historical events from the Ayyubid era until the end of the Muhammad Ali dynasty, which took over the rule of Egypt from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the July Revolution of 1952 AD.  Many facilities were added to the citadel over the ages, the most important of which are: Muhammad Ali Mosque, Al-Nasser Muhammad Ibn Qalawun Mosque, Suleiman Pasha Al-Khadim Mosque, in addition to a number of museums, including: Al-Jawhara Palace Museum, the Police, and the Military Museum.
